Education

Dr. Wiens completed his ophthalmology residency at McGill University in 1987, then went on to complete a further year of training in corneal and external diseases. He studied laser vision correction training in both Germany and the United States, completing his VISX® certification in 1999.

Experience

Dr. Wiens began his ophthalmology practice in Winnipeg at the Health Sciences Centre in 1988. Two years later, he moved to private practice, focusing on clinical care. In 1994, Dr. Wiens began performing laser vision correction in Winnipeg. He was the first ophthalmologist in Western Canada to offer 100% blade-free LASIK (IntraLase).

Current

Along with laser vision correction, Dr. Wiens’ practice includes Phakic intraocular lenses, cataract surgery, VISIAN EVO TICL, and DSEK corneal transplants. Since opening his practice in 1988, he has performed over 50,000 procedures. Dr. Wiens is on staff at Misericordia Health Centre and also performs surgery at Western Surgery Centre. His treatment approach always takes into account each patient’s personal vision needs, desires, and the condition of their eyes. His goal is to provide each patient with quality vision.

New and Noteworthy

Dr. Wiens is personally involved in selecting the laser technology used at Image Plus and only invests in lasers with a proven record of safety and effectiveness. In addition to his practice, Dr. Wiens is a well-respected educator, having lectured medical students and participated in providing continuing medical education about ophthalmology to physicians and other medical personnel.
