PRK with iDesign Refractive Studio

This procedure is designed to correct myopia, presbyopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

How it Works

There are two types of laser vision correction procedures; iLASIK™ and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).

PRK is a trusted procedure for vision correction for those who may not be a candidate for iLASIK™ and is also recommended for those who have an active lifestyle, such as athletes in a contact sport, and is approved by the US and Canadian Military for their personnel.

With eye procedures that involve a flap, such as iLASIK™, there is the potential for the flap to move if you experience impact or jarring after surgery. That might mean a second surgery to reposition the flap, which would take away from work and other activities for your recovery. PRK doesn’t use a flap, which means the risk of damage or needing another surgery is eliminated.

Traditional PRK

During this procedure, the surface layer of the cornea is gently removed with an amoils brush. The excimer laser is then used to treat the vision, just as it is in the iLASIKTM process, using the wavefront and topographical data from the iDesign® Refractive Studio map.

Trans PRK Plus (No Touch PRK)

Trans PRK (Transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy) is a procedure that uses the “no touch” Schwind Amaris 750S laser to remove the epithelium. Once removed, the patient’s prescription will then be treated with the VISX® Star S4 Active Trak™ using iDesign Refractive Studio.

Image Plus is the first clinic in Winnipeg to use the Schwind Amaris 750S for Trans PRK. Image Plus is fortunate to be able to offer both types of PRK, but traditional PRK is still the preferred treatment by Dr.Wiens when both procedures are an option.

What to Expect

At Image Plus, Dr. Wiens performed PRK surgery on several staff members who all returned to work after one week. By two weeks, they measured 20/20, but vision quality had not yet fully improved. Good quality vision returned about three to four weeks after surgery.
