VISX® Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront fromIMAGE PLUS
Every eye is unique, and any laser vision correction procedure should be just as unique, providing a personalized treatment. Your eye is unique as a fingerprint. These unique details are called wavefront. VISX® Star S4 Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront measures your unique wavefront details, as well as your eye glass prescription.
VISX® Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront
Your Eyes are as Unique as your Fingerprint
VISX® Star S4 Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront is an additional test and treatment for laser vision correction that allows your doctor to measure and treat the unique details in your vision. Many of these details could never be measured using standard testings for glasses and contact lenses. Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront based digital technology identifies and measures the unique characteristics of each eye 25 times more precisely than standard methods.* A detailed wavefront map of your eye is created by VISX® Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront. Your doctor uses this map to first design and ultimately treat your correction.
With Advanced CustomVue ™ WaveFront up to 98% of individuals will see 20/20 or better.* Wavefront treatments with Advanced CustomVue ™ WaveFront also maximizes the likelihood that night vision will stay the same or even improve.** In the past, when nonwavefront conventional laser treatments were done, there was a likelihood that night vision quality would worsen.
Customizing your treatment with Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront increases the likely hood of 20/20 vision while increasing the likelihood of having the same, or even better night vision.

Wavefront Technology
Wavefront technology was originally developed to measure optical distortions that occur to light when it travels through our atmosphere, entering an optical telescope (e.g. light from a star). This technology has been adapted for laser vision correction.
The WavePrint System™ by VISX® uses Fourier WaveFront sensing technology. This is a computer-based system that measures the subtle variability of how light is focused (or distorted) in different areas of your eye. These subtle variations are known as high order distortions (e.g. spherical aberrations, coma). They can account for up to 10% accuracy of all optical distortions, even in normal eyes.
The VISX® WavePrint System™ creates a special wavefront map detailing this variability, for your doctor to review. From this map, a detailed treatment plan can be created, taking into account your unique optical distortions, glasses prescription, pupil size, and visual needs. The final result is a treatment as unique as your DNA or fingerprint.
Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront: Your Assessment
Wavefront technology offers a new level of diagnosis and treatment, further refining your laser vision correction.
This is an option for people with:
Nearsightedness
Farsightedness
Astigmatism
The VISX® WavePrint™ Map provides information on more than just the front surface of your eye. It shows how light is focused in different areas of your eye. This gives your surgeon a new level of information to personalize your treatment plan.
WavePrint™ technology helps your doctor to:
Assess whether you may be a good candidate for Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront laser vision correction.
Verify the accuracy of your glasses prescription; and
Personalize your laser treatment plan to your eye’s unique focusing ability
Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront: Your Treatment
VISX® Star S4 Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront laser vision correction is performed with The WavePrint System™. This system includes:
The WavePrint Map
3D ActiveTrak™ Eyetracker;
Variable Spot Scanning (VSS™)
Iris Registration (IR™)
The WavePrint Map shows the variability of how light is focused in different areas of your eye, giving your surgeon a new level of information to personalize your treatment plan.
The 3D ActiveTrak™ Eyetracker follows any tiny movement that your eye makes, in all three dimensions during your laser treatment. It repositions the laser to ensure accuracy. Used with the VISX® S4 VSS™ excimer laser, the Eyetracker guides the laser through your wavefront treatment with greater accuracy. VSS™ produces variable beam sizes from as small as 0.65 mm and as large as 6.5 mm.
The VISX® S4 Variable Spot Scanning (VSS™) excimer allows for more accurate reshaping of your eye using your unique WavePrint™ profile. It also offers your surgeon greater flexibility in developing a more personalized laser vision procedure, for example, when large pupil size may be a consideration.
The 3D ActiveTrak™ Eyetracker, along with the Variable Spot Scanning ability of the VISX® S4 excimer laser, allow for treatment of both your glasses prescription and high order distortions. These distortions contribute to the ghosting, halos and starbursts that some patients experience after conventional nonwavefront laser surgery.
VISX® Iris Registration (IR™) is the newest component of Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront. It allows your surgeon to maximize proper placement of your laser treatment. Our eyes will rotate when we go from a sitting to a lying position. To account for this rotation, Advanced CustomVue™ Iris Registration takes photographs of your unique iris details (in the colored part of your eye) at the same time it does an Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront image assessment. This picture is then used by the VISX® excimer laser to confirm that the treatment is properly positioned, maximizing the effectiveness of your laser treatment. “Iris Registration” is only available with VISX® Star S4 Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront treatments.
What are the benefits of Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront?
The benefits of Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront guided laser vision correction include:
-Higher likelihood of seeing 20/20 or better
-The potential to offer treatment to people with larger pupils.
-A higher likelihood of maintaining or even improving the quality of your night vision.
Is Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront more beneficial for some people than others?
Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront increases the likelihood of seeing 20/20 or better in all prescription groups. It also tends to maintain or even improve night vision quality. The likelihood of seeing 20/20 or better, however, is even greater for patients with higher prescriptions, unusual prescriptions, or larger pupils, when compared to nonwavefront, conventional treatment.
Summary of 6-month results (for prescription <6.00D myopia to 3 D. astigmatism):
1. 96% of eyes had UCVA (uncorrected visual acuity) of 20/20 or better, 71% were 20/16 or better, and 22% were 20/12.5.
2. 47% had better post-op UCVA (uncorrected visual acuity) compared to their pre-op BSCVA (best corrected visual acuity).
3. 94% of eyes were within +0.50 D of the intended correction.
Safety:
1. 87% were very satisfied with their night vision after surgery, compared to 69% before surgery. 6% were somewhat or very dissatisfied after surgery compared to 22% before surgery.
2. 88% never or rarely had halos after surgery compared to 76% before surgery.
3. No eyes in this initial group lost more than 3 LETTERS of BSCVA (best corrected visual acuity).
Can I get the same result from a regular LASIK procedure if I choose not to have Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront?
For all patients who are laser vision correction candidates, Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront treatments have a higher likelihood of seeing better than 20/20, a decreased likelihood of a loss of vision, and an improved likelihood of the same or even better night vision.
For patients with higher prescriptions, however, the likelihood of seeing 20/20 is significantly greater when using Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront, compared to nonwavefront conventional laser treatments.
Is Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront a separate procedure?
Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront may be used with LASIK or PRK procedures. Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront describes the measurement and treatment of optical distortion as well as your glasses prescription. It includes the software used to run the VISX® Star S4 excimer laser. There is no significant technical difference, however, in how the actual LASIK or PRK procedure is done whether wavefront or conventional software is used.
Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront describes the measurement and treatment of optical distortions of the eye. Each person's eye is as unique as a fingerprint. Your unique wavefront includes your glasses prescription as well as more complex irregularities known as high order distortions. The measurement and treatment of high order distortions, including your glasses prescription, is done with The WavePrint System™
In general terms, there are two types of optical distortions: low order and high order. Low order distortions include short sightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. There are a number of types of high order distortions (ex. spherical abberation or coma). These may be responsible for some of the vision and night vision concerns that some patients have had after laser surgery. In the past, these include ghosting ("double" vision), starbursts, and halos. The measurement and treatment of optical distortion is done with the Advanced CustomVue™ WavePrint system.
The WavePrint System™ includes the WavePrint Map, 3D Active Trak™ Eyetracker, Variable Spot Scanning (VSS™), and Iris Registration (IR™). This system allows your surgeon to treat your eyes with Advanced CustomVue™ WaveFront guided laser excimer treatment according to your individual customized wavefront treatment plan.
