Are your arms getting shorter or is it really just getting more difficult to see closer up? If you are having difficulty reading fine print you are not alone. Typically, starting in your early forties, a natural aging process begins in which we lose the ability to focus on objects near. This process is called presbyopia.
Even after having laser eye surgery, reading glasses will likely be necessary. Laser vision correction does not speed up this process nor does it slow it down. Currently, there are several procedures that are under investigation to correct presbyopia, but not yet available.
One option for prolonging the need for reading glasses is to have mono-vision. Mono-vision is having one eye treated for close range and the other treated for distance. The amount that is treated for near can be adjusted depending on your needs. Mono-vision is not for everyone as it does take some time for you to become accustomed to the differences between the two eyes and reading glasses may still be necessary in the future. Due to the difference some patients experience, we recommend trying mono-vision with contact lenses prior to your surgery. Please speak with Dr. Wiens if you would like to discuss this option further.
