Refractive Surgery Guideline/Shopping List

How to find the right doctor?

Experience: How long has your doctor been performing refractive eye surgery? How many surgeries has your doctor performed?
Technology: Does your doctor use an FDA-approved wavefront laser? Were you given statistics on the technology they use?
Knowledge: Does the doctor continue to keep his training and knowledge with refractive surgery current?
Availability: Are you able to meet your surgeon before the day of surgery? Will he/she be involved with your post laser care?
Long Term Post Operative Care: Ensure that the cost they quote you includes all of the post operative care visits for 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year. Are your post operative visit included in your price and for how long? Are retreatments included? What is considered an appropriate retreatment?
Comfort Level: Is your doctor thorough at your consultation and spends the time to answer all your questions to your satisfaction?
Team of Staff: What is your first impression of the staff? Did they answer your questions with confidence? Did they provide you with materials and enough information on their technology and success rates?
Office Atmosphere: Did the office make you feel comfortable and relaxed? Did you feel pressure when booking the next appointment with them? Did you gain more knowledge about refractive surgery during your visit with them?
Cost: Do they outline in detail the cost of your laser eye surgery? Is cost a factor to your decision-making? Do they offer patient financing?

Post Operative Expectations:

Surgeon: Is your surgeon actively practicing in Winnipeg? Does he fly in from another city and do only the surgeries? Is your surgeon available to you for follow-up care?
Emergencies: Do they provide you with an after hours emergency contact phone number?
